Autograph of Martin Luther King, Jr.
by Gwen Simon Gain
(Clermont, Florida)
In October 1967 I was working in Philadelphia as a Field Rep for Fair-Housing, under a Ford Foundation grant; my territory was Southern New Jersey, where I lived.
Someone gave me two tickets to a benefit being held in a stadium in Philly -- Veterans Stadium, I believe -- with Dr. King as the special speaker. To our great surprise, my husband and I ended up in reserved seats sitting directly behind Martin Luther King.
He very graciously signed my program. It contains the names of several black celebrities such as Harry Belefonte. It has been in my safe-deposit box since then.
Only six months later, on April 4th, Dr. King was assassinated.
I am a white woman, now a widow of 81, living in Florida. During the sixties I was very active in the Civil Rights Movement.
