Movie Stars Autographed Photos
by Sherrie
(Freeport, IL)
My father inherited a large suitcase FULL of photos of old Hollywood movie stars - too numerous for me to even remember them all.
They were taken by photographer "Mac" McCormick, I'm not sure I remember his first name, but may be Frank. He went on to become a DJ in later years and was known as "The Wagon Master". Knowing that he was indeed the photographer who took these photos, I am sure they are all authentic. He told my father about how the photographers had close relationships with their subjects because it was their job to make them look good.
My husband has one of the Louis Armstrong photo's from the collection. There are other ones I can remember such as - Desi Arnez, Lucille ball, Laurel & Hardy, Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lewis,Gracie Allen, Fred Astaire, Errol Flynn, Charlie Chaplin, Cary Grant, the Hepburn's, Jimmy Durante, W.C. Fields.
I wish I could remember all of the ones he has, and every one autographed.
It has been some time since I have looked at them. They have always been kept put away in the suitcase. I often worry about possible damage if there was a fire or some sort of disaster.
We have often thought of taking them to be appraised for my father, but haven't really looked in to where to have it done.
It's a history of the old glamorous Hollywood when movie stars were just that.
Maybe you could offer some advise to us on how to handle & preserve these?
Rob:
Sherrie,
Thank you for sharing your story, that definitely is quite the vintage movie star autograph collection.
You also make a great point regarding autograph authenticity. By knowing and trusting the source these autographed photo's came from, you are 99.9% sure they are genuine (100% is only when you see them being signed yourself!).
As far as preserving and protecting them, I have had good luck with Avery Diamond Clear Heavyweight Presentation Sheet Protectors from Staples.
They are acid-free and archival quality and fit nicely in a 3-ring binder with a clear display. You can invest in a small fire-proof safe to store the binder in for added protection from damage.
If and when you do look at these again, we'd love to see a few of the examples - especially Sinatra!
Best,
Rob
