Selling Autographed Baseball Cards

by Macie
(Greenville, SC)

Hi Rob,

I have a lot of baseball cards that I am considering selling some of them. When researching auctions online I notice that people sell baseball cards that are autographed for less than an unsigned card?

I would think an autograph on the card would increase the value when selling baseball cards?

Thanks,
Macie

Macie,

You bring up an interesting phenomenon in the world of baseball card and autograph values!

Here's the deal - die-hard baseball card collectors are not autograph collectors! They want the card to be in mint condition, meaning no flaws, creases, and blemishes. A signature would be considered a blemish and would make the baseball card worth less!

Hard to believe for us die-hard autograph collectors, isn't it!?

I have seen some of the most valuable baseball cards that had been autographed, and the value of the card be lowered by more than half due to the autograph.

Like autographs, a baseball card value to people collecting and selling baseball cards is derived from important criteria such as the demand for the card (rookie card or special edition), scarcity, and overall condition.

I like that baseball card companies are catering more to autograph and memorabilia collectors with the randomly inserted autographed cards and memorabilia card with pieces of a game-used jersey, baseball bat insertions, and other rare sports memorabilia.

Good luck!
Rob
