Access to musicians is difficult, much more so than athletes and other celebrities. If only they did their sound checks right before the show when the gates were open, right? I love going to different Hard Rock Cafe's and Hotel's when I travel to check out the different music autographs and rare music memorabilia they have on display. By the way, rumor has it they have a proprietary method of displaying their priceless items that is virtually theft-proof - interesting, huh?

Speaking of the Hard Rock Hotel, my only musician encounter came at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas on 12/28/01 when I saw Axl Rose arriving to rehearse the night before the first of two concerts with his new Guns N Roses band. Like other areas of collecting, if you are interested in music autographs and autographed music memorabilia, there are certain strategies you can use to build your collection. 1- Get the autograph before they are superstars! If you know of a band or artist that is "up-and-coming", try to get their autograph now while access is easier. 2- Get backstage passes. Easier said than done (unless you have a good contact with the promoter, venue, or radio station. 3- Buy them from a reputable source. 4- Obtain them through the mail by sending your request (and SASE of course!) to the venue the artist or band is scheduled to appear a few days before the event. As with any request by mail, do not mail anything you cannot afford to part with due to scarcity or value. There is always a chance your item will not be returned.
