The market for collecting authentic signed sports autographs has grown significantly to a $2 billion industry as people realize what a fun and exciting hobby it can be. I built this page to spark your interest in the different categories available to you to get started today! |
What originally started for most of us as collecting baseball cards, collecting sports autographs in the form of autographed and game-used insert cards has become hugely popular.
I started collecting from the time I first went to baseball games as a kid, and would chase the foul balls in hopes of getting a souvenir.
And a player giving me a game-used broken baseball bat? Home run (pun intended)!
Additionally, signed photos, equipment, and jerseys have become widely popular to sports autograph collectors.
Since autographed sports memorabilia has become big business in recent
years, there are unfortunately a lot of fake autographs on the market
as a result of this. Players have also become reluctant to autograph
sports memorabilia at the ballpark, but many will appear at
autograph shows
that occur more and more these days.
You can easily find athlete memorabilia for sale online, in retail sports memorabilia stores such as Field of Dreams and along with sporting good stores such as Dicks Sporting Goods, along with some baseball card shops.
The Internet has helped contribute to this growth bringing collectors and dealers together on autograph sites, and sporting memorabilia auction sites such as eBay.
Websites like eBay have brought millions of products to our keyboards with astounding ease. Items that you would only find at a sports memorabilia auction that occurred perhaps once a year are available to you 24/7.
One downside to the tremendous growth in the authentic autographed sports memorabilia business is the reluctance of athletes to sign certain items for free anymore.
Jerseys, baseballs baseball bats, helmets, and equipment are becoming very tough to get signed, especially from an "A" list athlete.
Lucrative exclusive signing deals with sports memorabilia business manufacturers also may stipulate what, and how many, of an item a player can sign at a given event.
For example, good luck getting Tiger Woods to sign anything with his picture on it in Sunday red.
I personally have bought authentic autographed sports autographs directly from athletes such as Chipper Jones and Nolan Ryan. Both gentlemen donate the proceeds to their foundations, and I know it's real. The prices are also reasonable compared to other sources.
It is possible to still collect authentic sports autographs through the mail also. Current players are going to be harder to get, especially during the regular season and the demands of their schedules.
I usually will send items during the off-season to a home address if I
can find one. Otherwise I'll send it to the team and hope that my letter
is one of the first ones in the stack when the player shows up for a
new season!
Are you beginning to run out of wall space from all those autographed celebrity photo's?
One of the reasons I like collecting memorabilia is that with the exception of signed jerseys, they are relatively easy to display, and take up less space.
You can save money by opting for replica
versions of jerseys, signed NFL football helmets, etc. instead of the
authentic models the pros wear. The replica's are virtually identical,
and can be found for half the cost or less.
