Willie Mays Autograph Collecting Profile
A Willie Mays autograph is one of the most sought after autographs of famous baseball players alive today. One of the reasons for this is that Mays is not a really good signer, unless he is appearing at an
autograph show
or through his website.
Mays doesn't appear very frequently at autograph shows, and when he does there is considerable buzz and interest. His prices are some of the highest that I have seen in any recent memory. Prices at a recent Willie Mays autograph signing appearance were as follows: Ball or small Flat item: $300 Larger Flat item or Glove: $500 Bat or Jersey: $750 Inscriptions (no "Say Hey"): $199
Well, what about getting Mays to sign for free, you ask?Good luck. Through the mail? Nope. The "Say Hey" Kid (a slogan that he generally refuses to inscribe when signing autographs) is routinely described as the rudest, and worst athlete when it comes to signing autographs. Why this is, I really don't know. For years now, Mays has been described as rude, surly, and even nasty to autograph collectors and fans at the ballpark and paid signings. I have seen him "accidentally" sign a baseball with a Sharpie instead of the standard ball-point pen used 99.9% of the time to sign baseballs. And, this was at a paid signing. I don't get it, and I find it sad. The man is truly a living legend, and one of the greatest baseball players we have ever seen, and likely will see.
Mays recently signed a contract with Topps baseball cards to sign special insert cards in future baseball card sets. Hopefully we'll see some cool Willie Mays autograph cards come on the market with game used jersey and bat inserts. His signature is not as crisp and flowing as his younger days, but what a baseball player he was.
